Custom vs modular exhibition stands: which is right for your next show?

Custom stands stand out; modular stands save money over repeated shows. A clear comparison of cost, look, reuse and timing for exhibitors in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Europe.

Custom vs modular exhibition stands: which is right for your next show?

Choose a custom stand when you want to stand out at a major show, have a large or island space, or need a unique shape, a second floor or built-in technology. Choose a modular stand when you exhibit at three or more shows a year, need to move fast or want to lower the cost per show. Many brands now use a hybrid: a reusable modular base with custom feature pieces.

What is a custom exhibition stand?

A custom stand is designed from scratch for your brand and your exact space. It is usually built from timber, metal, acrylic and glass, with painted or laminated finishes, built-in lighting and AV. Every element can be shaped to your brand: curved walls, ceilings, product plinths, meeting rooms and even a second floor.

Best for: flagship shows such as GITEX Global, Gulfood or Arab Health, product launches, island and double-decker stands, and brands that need to outshine large neighbours.

What is a modular exhibition stand?

A modular stand uses a system of aluminium frames with fabric graphics or panels. The frames click together in different layouts, so the same kit can fit a 9 m² shell space in one city and an 18 m² space in another. Between shows, you usually only reprint the graphics.

Best for: brands on a regional tour, frequent exhibitors, smaller spaces and tight deadlines.

Side-by-side comparison

The hybrid option

A hybrid stand combines a reusable modular structure with a few custom hero pieces: a sculpted reception counter, an LED wall, a branded ceiling or a feature wall. You get a bespoke first impression where visitors look and the savings of reuse everywhere else. For brands exhibiting several times a year across the GCC and Europe, this is often the best value.

Five questions to help you decide

  1. How many shows will you exhibit at in the next 12 months? Three or more points to modular or hybrid.
  2. What size is your space? Large islands and double-deckers need custom.
  3. What is the goal? A launch or a flagship show justifies custom.
  4. Can you store the stand? Modular kits are compact; custom parts need warehouse space.
  5. How much time do you have? Under six weeks to the show favours modular.

How DOT Exhibits builds both

DOT Exhibits designs and builds custom, modular and hybrid stands in-house, with production in Dubai, Riyadh and Milan. Because design, carpentry, graphics, AV rental and furniture rental are all under one roof, we can mix systems on the same stand and store reusable parts for your next show.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a custom and a modular exhibition stand?

A custom stand is designed and built from scratch for one brand and one space, usually from timber, metal and acrylic. A modular stand is built from a reusable system of frames and fabric or panel graphics that can be rearranged for different stand sizes.

Is a modular stand cheaper than a custom stand?

For a single show the gap can be small. Modular stands save the most when you exhibit three or more times, because the frames are reused and only the graphics change.

Can a stand be part custom and part modular?

Yes. A hybrid stand uses a reusable modular structure with custom pieces such as a feature wall, counter, LED wall or ceiling element, giving a bespoke look at a lower cost per show.

Which type of stand is better for a double-decker or a large island space?

Custom. Double-decker stands, large islands and stands with complex shapes need engineered structures that a modular system cannot provide.
